Frankly, I think we have too much power over our own bodies. Or at least I feel this way after messing up my sleep, messing up my food, doing little exercise, and overall behaving as if I’m fifteen and on a Naruto bender.

But despite the cotton candy in my head and the fact that I almost dislocated a foot yesterday simply by stepping on it wrong, it’s good to stress-test myself once in a while. I used to be absolutely horrible when in bad physical shape.

Now, if I say something hurtful, it's mostly because I'm simply an ass and only somewhat because of health or exhaustion.

They tell you to be authentic on the internet. And by they I mean friendly, charming, slightly quirky people.

Sure. If you are a nice person, and you need to get over your shyness to let other people bathe in the warmth of your presence, then it's a good idea. But hell if it's for everyone.

Half the time, my issues have issues. I am not a pleasant person to be around, or at least I believe so, and even if outside of my head I'm the greatest guy in the world, screw it, because I live inside my head, and piling my crap onto other people's plates brings such guilt that all the authenticity in the world can go and screw itself with an industrial drill.

It took me the longest time to realize that creators I come back to on social media are the ones who care about their topic and about their readers or viewers and who keep putting out great stuff—I used to think it was eccentricity or expertise that drew me to them. And I now believe Seth Godin (one of those creators) when he says that in this age, caring is the best marketing.

Some people believe that it’s luck—the magic of internet chaos that picks favorites. I don’t believe that.

When I see Hank and John Green make funny, educational, and heartfelt videos year after year as comments erupt in flame wars, while Hank and John also raise kids and deal with mental health problems, I don’t see luck. I just think it takes guts and kindness and a work ethic to succeed on the Internet, and few have it or are ready to pour it into unpaid work.
